Barratt Redrow, the UK’s largest housebuilder, has become the latest major player in the construction sector to fully adopt The Pallet LOOP’s national pallet reuse and recovery service—marking a significant step toward waste reduction and greener logistics in UK housebuilding.
With the number of distinctive green LOOP pallets entering the building materials supply chain surpassing one million, Barratt Redrow has integrated the scheme across all of its sites nationwide.
By the end of June 2025, it is estimated that the housebuilder will have returned more than 400,000 pallets (green and white) for reuse, preventing them from being sent to landfill or incineration.
This partnership highlights a growing shift within construction supply chains toward circular economy practices, as contractors and housebuilders respond to increasing pressure to reduce emissions, cut waste, and improve resource efficiency.
Construction’s Sustainability Challenge
Construction sites across the UK take delivery of millions of timber pallets each year—many of which are used once before being discarded. Barratt Redrow, like many others, has long sought to handle pallet waste responsibly, returning British Gypsum’s larger pallets through its previous collection scheme and working with Scott Pallets, now the official recovery partner for The Pallet LOOP.
The new nationwide agreement now consolidates all pallet returns—both green LOOP pallets and standard white ones—through a single, centralised service, simplifying logistics and improving sustainability.
“In a short space of time, some of our biggest building materials suppliers have moved to using The Pallet LOOP’s circular economy pallets,” said John Adams, Group Procurement Director at Barratt Redrow.
“This is great news for our business and for other housebuilding companies nationwide.
The Pallet LOOP solves multiple issues for our business – providing a standardised range of strong, reusable pallets, and consolidating pallet returns via one easy-to-use system. This is helping us reduce waste and cut carbon, while also enhancing efficiencies across our operations.”
One Million Pallets and Counting
The Pallet LOOP, part of BSW Group, is designed to transform how pallets are used in UK construction by promoting reuse over disposal. It replaces the traditional “deliver, distribute, discard” model with a “recover, repair, reuse” approach that cuts timber consumption and landfill waste.
“We are grateful to the team at Barratt Redrow for fully embracing our pallet collection service,” said Andy Williamson, Commercial Director at The Pallet LOOP.
“As the number of LOOP pallets issued to date surpasses the one million mark, we’re encouraging other housebuilding companies to consider how our business can benefit their operations. Our collection service is simple to use and offers significant environmental and financial advantages – helping housebuilders lower costs and make a positive impact on their sustainability targets. As we strive to help the construction sector become more circular and resource efficient, and as activity in the housebuilding sector ramps up, we look forward to working with companies nationwide to help solve the problem posed by pallet waste.”
Pallet Reuse with PayBack
To drive adoption, The Pallet LOOP offers a PayBack of up to £4 per green pallet returned for reuse. This provides a financial incentive for housebuilders to take part, while reducing demand for virgin timber used in traditional pallet production.
The LOOP system is currently in use by leading building materials suppliers including British Gypsum, Isover, Superglass, and Wienerberger, helping drive systemic change across the supply chain.
How It Works
Once registered with The Pallet LOOP, contractors and site managers can easily arrange pallet returns using a central booking system.
The scheme covers both green LOOP pallets and white pallets deemed suitable for reuse.
