Construction contractor Baxall recently announced a planned leadership transition, with Managing Director Malcolm Clarke stepping down after more than 35 years in the role.

Clarke, a former National Chair of the National Federation of Builders (NFB), will become chairman of the business, while Contracts Director Stuart Hardie takes over as managing director.

The company said the move forms part of a long-term succession strategy and will not affect ongoing operations or project delivery.

New managing director takes over at £50m turnover contractor

Baxall has grown from a family-run building firm into a £50m turnover contractor delivering projects across London and the South East.

The business has worked across a range of sectors during Clarke’s tenure, including education, heritage refurbishment and public sector decarbonisation projects.

Reflecting on the transition, Clarke said: “Leading Baxall has been an absolute privilege. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together as a team and of the ‘right first time’ culture we have built.

“This is the right time to hand over to the next generation of leadership, and I have every confidence that Stuart will continue to drive the business forward while staying true to our values.”

Succession planning remains a key focus for construction SMEs

Hardie joined Baxall in 2022 after holding senior positions with Tier One contractors and brings more than 25 years of industry experience to the role.

The appointment comes as succession planning and leadership development continue to be important issues for many established construction SMEs seeking long-term stability and growth.

Hardie said: “I am delighted to take on the role of MD and to build upon the extraordinary foundations established by Malcolm.

“Baxall has an exceptional team, trusted clients and a clear strategic direction.

“My focus will be on maintaining our impeccable standards, supporting our people and continuing to deliver outstanding outcomes for our clients and wider communities.”

Chairman to remain involved in long-term business strategy

While stepping away from day-to-day leadership responsibilities, Clarke will remain actively involved in the company as chairman, supporting the transition and contributing to Baxall’s future direction.

The contractor said the leadership change is intended to provide continuity for clients, employees and supply chain partners while maintaining the company’s existing strategic objectives.

The announcement marks the latest example of a regional construction business implementing a structured leadership succession plan as the sector continues to focus on long-term resilience, governance and sustainable growth.
