The National Federation of Builders (NFB) is proud to welcome Northern Bear Plc, a company built on regional expertise and specialist knowledge, into membership.
In a time where construction must not only meet demand but also deliver long-term value for communities, Northern Bear brings a refreshing commitment to quality, heritage, and capability. With ten well-established businesses operating across the North of England, the group represents a modern approach to construction delivery – regional, responsible, and responsive.
Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northern Bear Plc operates a family of construction and building services companies that each retain their local character, while benefiting from the strength and stability of being part of a listed group.
Northern Bear’s work spans the public and private sectors, from commercial refurbishments and heritage conservation to new-build developments and reactive maintenance. What unites the group’s subsidiaries is a shared focus: build well, build locally, and build with purpose.
Two of Northern Bear’s standout businesses, MGM Construction and Arcas Building Solutions, exemplify what that approach looks like in practice.
Delivering community benefit at Beamish

Beamish Football Club
MGM Construction, part of Northern Bear since 2007, continues to demonstrate how construction can support local identity and social infrastructure. A key regional contractor with long-standing relationships across the public sector, MGM builds more than just physical structures, it delivers on the priorities of local people.
This commitment was brought to national attention through the Beamish Football Centre, a multi-pitch grassroots football hub in County Durham. Constructed by MGM and covered by the BBC, the project reflects what happens when regional contractors are trusted to lead on community-facing developments: timelines are met, local labour is used, and outcomes exceed expectation.
The Beamish project was not only a sports facility; it was a catalyst. Designed to improve youth engagement, encourage active lifestyles, and serve as a base for grassroots development, it showed how construction can be a tool for social cohesion.
It also reinforced a central message that the NFB champions: regional contractors, when empowered and trusted, are best placed to deliver local impact.
Heritage and progress in the heart of Newcastle

Arcas Building Solutions Newcastle Building Society
Meanwhile, in the commercial heart of Newcastle, Arcas Building Solutions, another of Northern Bear’s specialist firms, is delivering one of the city’s most high-profile refurbishment projects.
Arcas has been appointed Lead Contractor for the redevelopment of an iconic corner building at Grainger Street and Monument, transforming the site into a flagship branch for Newcastle Building Society. For a city that values its architectural heritage and civic identity, this is more than a retail refurbishment, it’s a symbol of how regeneration and local expertise go hand in hand.
Arcas specialises in complex refurbishments and city-centre developments. The Grainger Street project exemplifies their ability to modernise space while retaining historic character, a balance that too often gets lost in urban redevelopment. It also reinforces the value of construction businesses who know the cities they’re building in—not just through project experience, but through people, networks, and context.
A stronger industry through regional leadership
As an NFB member, Northern Bear Plc joins a federation that recognises the value of businesses rooted in place. Its group structure empowers companies like MGM and Arcas to grow with autonomy, while benefiting from central support. This mirrors the decentralised strengths of the NFB’s own membership.

In a sector often shaped by volume over value, Northern Bear’s approach is timely. Their businesses demonstrate how sustainable growth, community relevance, and commercial viability are not competing priorities, they are interconnected goals, achieved through thoughtful delivery and long-term relationships.
With deep ties to local authorities, housing providers, and commercial clients across the North East and beyond, Northern Bear is well-positioned to contribute to regional regeneration, skills development, and the delivery of projects that last.
The NFB exists to give regional builders a national voice. By joining our federation, Northern Bear Plc brings its voice, and those of its talented subsidiaries, into a wider conversation about how we build smarter, better, and more locally. We welcome them warmly and look forward to shaping the future of construction together.
Welcome to the NFB, Northern Bear. You build what matters.
